The High Rollers kicked My Tushy!!!

20 Apr

Today was a day of it’s own! First off, I have never been so sore after a live shot. 🙂 It is  all about the Advil today! I spent the morning with the Las Vegas High Rollers, the very first origianl roller derby team here in the Valley. This league is amazing! They have players of all ages ranging from 30’s all the way up to the 60’s.  A viewer wrote in challenging me to have a roller derby off with the team because the High Rollers actually play on a Banked Track not a flat track like most roller derby leagues. Let’s just say this banked track was the main reason for all of my crashing! The track was used in the Charlies Angels movie and is now here in Las Vegas. The track is the largest banked track in the world. It is also the most difficult track for me in the world!!! I have to say while spending the morning with the team was a blast… my tushy right now is really in a lot of pain. I fell more times than I can count. The players were also not shy… let’s just say they were slamming me into the ground. At one point it was a roller derby mash-up with at least 6 players piled on top of little old me! But hey… this muscle masher can’t complain! I’m rough and tough, and there is now way a roller derby team is going to take down Extreme Amy! But they did  keep the bruises coming! For more info on the High Rollers you can  e-mail Lali at lvhrbankedtrackrollerderby.com or call (702)-580-9407. They are recruiting but you can’t be scared! 🙂 I’t’s all about the bruises baby!!! Bring your tushy pads!

    Amy,

I live in Southern California, but I saw the footage here from your morning show. It’s good to see the Derby up close and personal like you did. Since the 1930’s, the derby has been around, and really gained popularity in the 1960’s thru the 1980’s, and has been on a slow decline.

With this original roller derby team, the Las Vegas High Rollers, they should hopefully generate a renewed interest in the sports, and get a new generation of fans to this sport. People like the late Ralphie Valladares, the great Skinny Minnie Gwen Miller, Sally Vega, Jusy Arnold, Jusy Sowinsky, the late Shirley Hardman….they revolutionized the sport. With Lali and her team, you have a new group of people who LOVE to skate, and get out there and give it all they got for the fans.

I did get to see the clips of this mornings show, and everything was great to watch. Lali, Trish, Melissa, Brenda and everyone there with you on the live shot are all terrific, and glad to have them as friends.

Kudos to you, Amy on getting out there….even though you didn’t have your “tushy pads”. I suggest, soaking your tushy in the tub with warm water. It might make your tukas feel better. 🙂

    Sincerely,

    Chuck

I love banked track roller derby! So much more difficult looking than roller rinks. I’ll be at every live bout! Go VEGAS!

As being the web-master of the new Las Vegas High Rollers web-site, i wished someone would of told me that Lali and team mates are giving out the site’s domain name. It is not ready for the world to see. I still had a few more things to add 🙂

The Sport of Roller Derby started around 1935 with a bunch of people skating on a track, in what was an endurance contest. Basically, whoever was left standing was declared the winner. Leo Seltzer and his brother Oscar, started the Roller Derby in 1935 and it quicky developed into a popular sport which brought us such stars at the time like Midge “Toughy” Brasuhn, Gerry Murray and Billy Bogash. They were popular people back in the 30’s and 40’s. It evolved into a bigger sport, and in the 1960’s, Bill Griffiths, Sr., founded Roller Games International (RGI), where they had some new, talented skaters such as the “Guatemalan Flayer” Ralphie Valladares, Greg Robertson, Larry Lewis, Honey Sanchez (Ralphie’s wife), Judy Arnold, Terry Lynch, Sally Vega and contuinued on in the 70’s with the same people and even had a crazy guy named Ronnie “Psycho” Rains, Danny Reilly, Dave Pound, Skinny Mini Gwen Miller, Patsy Delgado and many, many more stars.

I have loved this sport growing up as a kid, and continue to hold a very special place in my heart for the sport. Lali O., has a track, and it is a large track. it is the size of track they used in the old roller derby in the 60’s through the 80’s. It measures approximately 96 feet long by 60 feet wide. Now days, they use a track that is about 30 feet shorter and 15 feet less wide. Maybe 60′ by 45′. I am glad to see Lali training people on her track, and that she is bringing a new team and a new league together. This is a fantastic sport, full of excitement, and I’m hoping that this will bring in a renewed interst to the sport.
